02 Sep Warsaw: Green City and Climate Action Leader
Warsaw steps up to the plate as a world leader in green change by pushing forward new initiatives that will see the city transformed for the better
Poland’s biggest city is ranked in the top ten greenest cities in Europe and is ahead of the game in transforming its infrastructure to meet the EU’s sustainability goals. The municipal government is actively addressing an expected rise in transport challenges due to a growing population while tackling air quality concerns and heightened carbon emissions. The city of 1.8 billion is fueling its resources in creating a safer environment by tackling inequality issues and upping spend on healthcare facilities.
The capital launched its Green City and Climate Action Plan in December 2020 as part of European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s $2.4-billion EBRD Green Cities program, designed to lower carbon emissions and drive sustainable innovation in Europe’s urban centers. As a first project under the program, Warsaw began revamping its metro system to meet increased demand and modernize its vehicles to lower carbon emissions. The city is also developing a program to replace coal stoves by 2023 to combat air pollution and energy poverty in low-income communities.
