Belgrade’s public sector is pushing forward massive reforms to see the city shine as an example of sustainability and ingenuity.

Serbia’s capital city has worked hard to attract investments that will revitalize one of the oldest cities in Europe and bring its thriving urban center up to the EU’s ambitious green guidelines. In 2018, Belgrade joined the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s Green Cities initiative, a program that looks to rehabilitate urban infrastructure in accordance with sustainable standards. In 2021, the city penned the two following development projects: Green City Action Plan and Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan. The two programs will see $6.1 billion earmarked towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, countering climate change and improving air quality.

The city of just over a million plans on changing all its buses to electric, installing public electric bicycles and creating 306 additional miles of bikeways and pedestrian paths. Belgrade also plans to incorporate new renewable energy sources into its mix, including using geothermal and wind sources, the latter of which has a 111 MW potential from eight potential sites. With all European cities undergoing a revolution in sustainable infrastructure, Belgrade is setting itself up to lead the way.
